Dia de los Muertos, movies, pancakes and more happening in Nebraska this weekend

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — This weekend is gearing up to be much warmer than the season average, and we’ve compiled a list of great ways to enjoy it.

FEATURED EVENTS:

Good Life Halfsy – Sunday, 8:30 a.m.

The Good Life Halfsy is Nebraska’s biggest and best half-marathon and takes runners on a point-to-point journey through Lincoln, finishing in the historic Haymarket District.

Dia de los Muertos – Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Latin American holiday will be celebrated with live music, traditional Mexican folkloric dance, storytelling, food trucks, art activities and ofrendas (traditional memorial displays). Admission to all performances and activities at this family-oriented event is free for everyone.

Auld Pavilion in Antelope Park, 1650 Memorial Drive, Lincoln

Ghouls & Glow at the Zoo – All weekends, 6:30-10 p.m.

This zero-frightful and all-delightful event is an illuminated spectacle. Featuring family fun activities around the zoo including trick-or-treating, magic shows, and 400 larger-than-life lanterns you can only see at Omaha’s zoo. New this year, you can buy s’mores kits and mini pumpkins to decorate and take home. And for parents, On Friday and Saturday nights, two bars will be available with seasonal alcoholic drinks.

Creepy Cookies – Saturday, 10-11:30 a.m.

If scary is no fun for your little ones, then don’t miss the sweetest party in town: Creepy Cookies at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium. Wear your Halloween shirt and enjoy a spooky fun story time, Halloween-themed cookie decorating and much more. Cost is $15 for zoo members and $20 for non-members. Children under 1 are free.

Ashland-Greenwood FFA Fall Festival – Sunday, 4-7:30 p.m.

Celebrate all things fall this year with the Ashland and Greenwood FFA Club. There will be food and sweets, plus games and more. All proceeds from the event will go to the Ashland-Greenwood FFA Chapter.

Johnny Carson’s Birthday Party – Saturday, 5:30-8 p.m.

Celebrate the late Johnny Carson’s birthday with a night of comedy and cupcakes. Enjoy as area comedians share their talent in honor of the king of late night. $10/person at the door.

OMAHA AREA:

October Art Fluid – Friday, 5-8 p.m.

Art Fluid is a happy hour and open-studio night that focuses on experiencing the creative process. This Halloween-themed event will feature demonstrations, make-and-take projects and a scavenger hunt. You can create your own Halloween mask, and there will be a limited number of discounted Raku and glassblowing experiences.

baseballoween – Friday, 5-8 p.m.

Back for its eleventh year, Baseballoween invites kiddos to wear their favorite costumes and trick or treat around the Werner Park concourse. Enjoy a safe, free family-friendly event full of fun and interactive activities. Plus, a movie will be played on the video board.

Cass St Trick R Treat – Saturday, 9 am to noon

Bring the whole family for a ghoulishly good time at this Halloween carnival featuring games, candy, and a ghastly, groovy but delightfully spooky zombie orchestra. Costumes are encouraged. This free family-friendly event is presented by Omaha Conservatory of Music, Omaha Community Playhouse and Omaha Academy of Ballet.

LINCOLN:

LNK Outdoor Movie – Friday, 6 p.m.

Food and Fun will begin around 6 pm, and the movie will play at dark, which will be around 8:30. The event is held on the west side of the airport in an open green space. The movie will be projected on the side of an old Cold War hangar, and attendees will be allowed to stay in their cars or bring blankets and chairs to sit in the grass. The event is free to the community, but please register to attend.

63rd Pancake Festival – Saturday, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Tickets include all you can eat pancakes, two sausage links, orange juice, milk and coffee. Tickets are $8 for adults, free for kids 6 and under. Proceeds will support a variety of youth and community-support organizations, including The Hub, Visionary Youth, Lincoln Children’s Zoo, Lincoln Children’s Museum and many others.

DENTON:

Hoot ‘n’ Howl Fest – Saturday, 5-8 p.m.

Save the date for a fall festival in the tallgrass prairie. Come for live music, nature activities, crafts, wagon rides, a live bird show and the famous crepuscular creep. Also, after the sun goes down, the Lincoln Astronomical Society will have large telescopes for stargazing. And you could possibly see the Orionids meteor shower.

COLUMBUS:

Dodgeball Tournament – Saturday, 1-5:30 p.m.

This dodgeball tournament is a fundraiser for Big Pals-Little Pals. Get a team of your friends together, have fun and support a great cause all at the same time.

GRAND ISLAND:

Grand Island 150 – Sunday, 2-4 p.m.

This program is for children and will be held at the Burlington Station. The Tri-City Model Railroad Association will delight children with its extraordinary model railroads. Before and after viewings of the trains, children will be able to participate in craft and story time with library staff.

HASTINGS:

Bronco Bash – Saturday, 6 p.m.

Come paint pumpkins at Libs Park. Parks and Recreation will provide the pumpkins and paint (preregistration required). Enjoy a s’more and walk through the park decorated with scarecrows. Cap the night off by watching a fun Halloween movie under the stars.

KEARNEY:

halloween party – Sunday 2-5 p.m.

Join the Archway & Kearney Park and Recreation for a family-friendly afternoon packed with Halloween fun. Paint a funny face on a pumpkin, race through the creepy obstacle course, try your hand at the spooky carnival games and enjoy a festive day. The cost is $5/person. Pre-registration is not required but is encouraged.

Painting for Fun – Saturday, 1 p.m.

Discover your artistic potential and create fun memories as you are guided step by step through your own work of art. This class is perfect for beginners and a great way to gain confidence as an artist. All materials are provided. Please wear clothes to paint in and lay cardboard out in your vehicle so your wet works of art can be taken home safely.
